Disease can be caused by various factors, including poor hygiene practices and inadequate nutrition. In third-world countries, waterborne diseases are prevalent where clean water is not readily available. Malnutrition and gastrointestinal problems are widespread, often stemming from diets high in starch and deficient in fruits and vegetables, which are essential sources of the vitamins and minerals needed to prevent illness.
The Impact of Disease on Children
Thousands of children die from malnutrition or other easily preventable diseases, simply because their parents didn’t have access to the knowledge that could’ve prevented these diseases. In Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, a staggering one-third of children suffer from malnutrition. In South Sudan, life expectancy is a mere 55 years due to the high mortality rate among young children. Each year in the Philippines, 60,000 children under the age of five lose their lives to malnutrition and disease. These sobering statistics highlight the urgent need for action to address these preventable tragedies and improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations.
Education Empowers
FARM STEW is on a mission to equip parents and communities with the essential tools and knowledge to prevent disease and ensure their children thrive. By focusing on sustainable farming, nutrition, hygiene, and entrepreneurship, FARM STEW empowers families to build healthier and more resilient lives. Through hands-on training and education, parents learn how to grow nutrient-rich crops, practice proper sanitation, and prepare balanced meals, which significantly reduce the risk of malnutrition and disease. These practices not only improve the immediate health of children but also lay the foundation for long-term well-being and prosperity.
In addition to promoting healthy lifestyles, FARM STEW fosters economic independence by teaching community members how to start and manage small businesses. This entrepreneurial training provides families with the means to support themselves financially, further enhancing their ability to access essential resources like clean water, healthcare, and education. By addressing the root causes of poverty and illness, FARM STEW is creating lasting change, helping communities to break free from the cycle of deprivation and build a brighter future for their children. Through their holistic approach, FARM STEW is not just saving lives but transforming them, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to grow up healthy and strong.
Keys to Freedom
The training provided by FARM STEW is immensely life-changing, yet profoundly simple. One of the first tools we introduce is the Tippy-Tap, a clever contraption that allows for easy handwashing with a jug of water. We also teach communities how to construct safe latrines, ensuring that human waste is properly contained and managed.
Once a community has implemented the FARM STEW recipe and demonstrated commitment to its principles, they can apply to become a FARM STEW Certified Community and receive a well, providing access to clean water.
Beyond sanitation and water, nutrition plays a crucial role in preventing disease. We teach families how to grow thriving kitchen gardens, enabling them to access fresh fruits and vegetables. In many communities, fresh produce is scarce, and diets consist largely of starch. Access to nutritious food rich in vitamins and minerals is a major step towards breaking free from the cycle of disease and hardship, empowering families to lead healthier, more productive lives.
